Licorice

Licorice root is a biologically active herbal preparation. The primary active component appears to be glycyrrhizin which has corticosteroid - like properties, apparently through inhibiting the breakdown of certain corticosteroids. It has been used for upper GI complaints such as gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD] and Dyspepsia for millennia. It also has anti - infective properties and may help lessen the effects of URI. Additionally, its anti - inflammatory properties are useful in skin conditions such as eczema. Its antioxidant properties have even demonstrated decreases in LDL cholesterol oxidation [Oxidized - LDL].
